Unexpected Inspiration

Unexpected Inspiration

Inspiration comes unexpectedly sometimes. One Saturday afternoon in April, I was spending time with my ailing father in his residential care home. While he ate lunch, I thumbed through a magazine, showing him pictures to trigger his memory and give us something new to talk about. I came across an advertisement for dog food ( I don’t even remember the brand). There was a sepia-tone photograph of the most adorable bulldog I’d ever seen. Something about the look in his eye just stole my heart. I knew immediately that I wanted to paint him. I tore the page out of the magazine and took it home to post in my studio. Having lost all creative energy for months, this photograph inspired me to pick up a brush again. I finished the painting in 3 days, delighted with the results. Yes! I still had my artist soul. I admit, I’d begun to have my doubts. I titled this piece Angus. He just looks Scottish, don’t you think?
